Dale C. Hetzler, the general counsel and vice president of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, has resigned after eight years to become general counsel and senior vice president for Erlanger Health System based in Chattanooga, Tenn. Erlanger is a nonprofit teaching center affiliated with the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

At Children’s, Hetzler reoriented the hospital’s legal department from litigating against patients with claims to mediating, which he said in a 2005 interview had reduced the average life cycle of a claim from 36 months to 18 months, lowering the cost of defending a claim from about $100,000 on average to $50,000.
