Cheryl F. Turner-daughter of a high school principal and an English teacher-grew up in Atlanta and attended the city’s Benjamin E. Mays High School, named for the former Morehouse College president. After she graduated from Emory University with a degree in English and International Studies, what she really wanted to do was serve in the Peace Corps and travel. But her family didn’t go for that idea.

“My mother would not let me be in the Peace Corps, just as her father would not let her be a flight attendant,” Turner said.
