Wachovia Corp. has had just about every kind of legal trouble that a financial services giant could have. In recent months the company has been buffeted by various accounting problems, a telemarketing fraud, a federal probe into its money laundering prevention practices, and a flood of shareholder suits related to bad mortgages and loans.

Little wonder that when Charlotte, N.C.-based Wachovia went looking for a new general counsel, it picked someone who has plenty of experience as a crisis manager. Jane Sherburne has put out fires throughout her career, first as a top lawyer in the Clinton administration and then at Citigroup Inc. Sherburne, who joined Wachovia on June 16, is serving as co-GC with Mark Treanor until Treanor takes his previously scheduled retirement Aug. 11.
