Military veterans, indigent defense, revising the state’s juvenile code and a new satellite office in Savannah were priorities for the State Bar of Georgia at its fall Board of Governors meeting Thursday. And in the midst of state budget shortfalls and a national economic crisis, the State Bar reported that it’s doing so well financially it will rebate $20 of member’s $230 in annual dues.

Despite the falling stock market, said treasurer S. Lester Tate III, a member of Akin & Tate in Cartersville, the State Bar earned $837,000 on investments last year-a $200,000 increase over the prior year-under the stewardship of the bar’s chief financial officer, Steve Laine, and executive director, Clifton A. Brashier Jr. The State Bar ended fiscal 2008 with $3.6 million in unrestricted reserves.
