After a morning session largely consumed by the reading of the 54-count indictment of accused Fulton County Courthouse shooter Brian G. Nichols, the jury and courtroom were jolted by the prosecution’s opening statement, marked by the playing of an audiotape of the gunshots that killed Fulton County Superior Court Judge Rowland W. Barnes and court reporter Julie Anne Brandau, whose tape recorder-left running-preserved her last moments of life.

Muted gasps and hands pressed to lips met the playing of the tape, which began during the civil proceeding Barnes was hearing on the morning of March 11, 2005, a last-minute addition to his calendar to be dispatched before he resumed hearing evidence in Nichols’ ongoing rape trial.
