Some members of the state’s criminal defense bar are worried that the recent indictments of two lawyers by a Douglas County grand jury for stealing funds from the estate of a murder victim may send a chilling message to other defense attorneys.

The leader of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers noted that the money at the center of the dispute-including attorney fees paid to the lawyers by the victim’s wife, who later pleaded guilty to having him murdered-is already the focus of civil litigation.
