Editor’s note: The writer was a candidate for the Georgia Court of Appeals seat that will be decided in a runoff Dec. 2.

The runoff between Sara L. Doyle and Mike Sheffield presents a conflict between two opposing ideas about how judicial candidates-and judges-should conduct themselves. Doyle has championed ideals that I have made my own personal mission for a number of years: that judges and judicial candidates should exhibit rigorous dedication to fairness and impartiality and should abstain from prejudging issues on the campaign trail. Sheffield has allowed himself to be championed by organizations dedicated to politicizing judicial elections and extracting prejudgments from judicial candidates.
