Nearly four years after the Georgia Legislature and Gov. Sonny Perdue approved sweeping changes to the state’s tort laws, the governor is ready to tackle the issue again.

The Republican governor said Tuesday that he will have legislation introduced this month on his behalf that would make dramatic changes to how and when lawsuits can be filed in Georgia state courts. Several lawmakers and lobbyists said on Tuesday that they were surprised by Perdue’s announcement and did not expect tort reform to be an issue in this year’s legislative session.
