Personal: Kennedy grew up in New York City. His wife, Ellen, is a textile artist turned papermaker. The couple have two daughters-Julia, 12, and Emma, 9. When he isn’t working, Kennedy is a practitioner and teacher of tai chi. He also is an avid reader of books on economics and financial history. He’s on the boards of his daughters’ school and the Appleseed Foundation, which uses the law to encourage social reform.

Words to live by: For many years I had a quotation on my desk that said, “True happiness comes from squandering your life on a great purpose.” Life requires of us that we take what we have and make things better. I’ve learned from the example of the many mentors and other practitioners who’ve given of themselves to take what I’ve accomplished and share it with others. The more you share, I’ve found, the more things will come to you.
