When he was a boy in Kingsport, Tenn., Carter R. Todd would listen to Grand Ole Opry broadcasts on WSM-AM, 280 miles away in Nashville.

Decades later, Todd is in Nashville helping Gaylord Entertainment Co., which owns both WSM and the Grand Ole Opry, transform itself from a shambling music and entertainment conglomerate into a leaner company with prime assets in resorts and hotels.
