Little did he know that six years later he’d be general counsel of the third-largest Internet company in the United States. In that role, DeSimone has overseen several multimillion-dollar legal victories against those who misuse EarthLink’s services. He’s also developed a reputation for aggressively pursuing spammers-people who flood inboxes with junk e-mail.

It all started with a 1998 phone call from his former roommate at Amherst College, Charles M. Brewer.
