BIRMINGHAM, Ala. AP – A human rights group filed a federal lawsuit Thursday alleging rampant violence, overcrowding and inhumane conditions at Alabama’s Donaldson prison, which is designed for fewer than 1,000 prisoners but packed with nearly 1,800.

The Atlanta-based Southern Center for Human Rights filed the federal class-action lawsuit in Montgomery claiming Donaldson prison is so overcrowded that three inmates are crammed into cells measuring only 8-by-12 feet.
