ATLANTA AP – Georgia’s transportation bureaucracy would get a radical makeover under a bill that cleared the state Senate.

The plan, which passed 30-25 on Thursday, hands the Legislature and the governor far more power in distributing transportation dollars to roads, bridges and transit projects. Supporters say it’s needed to reform a dysfunctional transportation department saddled with a huge budget shortfall and long delays delivering road projects needed to keep up with the state’s fast-growing population.
