We compete with other countries to provide an attractive place to do business. Striking the right balance of advantages to and burdens on businesses of locating facilities in the United States verses other countries is important. As noted in an earlier essay Harvard professor Michael Porter has identified several ways in which the United States is undermining its competitive position in the world, and we need to address these issues.

We need to find a better, fairer and less expensive way to resolve employment disputes and to address environmental issues and product liability concerns. We need to find new and better ways to resolve issues between labor and business management. The current adversarial approach often does not produce good results for the country. Labor unions sometimes ignore the economic facts of life and make demands on their employers that cannot be met without bankrupting the businesses upon which both management and labor depend. On the other hand, history has seen management take advantage of their employees when they have not had access to the support of unions.
