With Thurbert E. Baker’s announcement that he’ll raise money for a potential campaign for governor, attorneys across the state are eyeballing an extremely rare opportunity in Georgia-an election for attorney general with no incumbent.
No attorney general has been elected to an open seat since 1942, when Ellis G. Arnall resigned to run for governor, according to University of Georgia political scientist Charles Bullock. Each of the five attorneys general since Arnall was appointed to the office after his successor stepped down in the middle of a term.
