BIRMINGHAM, Ala. AP – Fired HealthSouth chief executive Richard Scrushy testified Wednesday that he wasn’t involved in a massive fraud at the rehabilitation chain, his first public testimony about the scandal that almost forced the company into bankruptcy.
Scrushy began testifying in a civil lawsuit filed by shareholders who want him to pay $2.6 billion for what they claim was his role in the fraud. During more than a week of testimony, their attorneys presented witnesses who blamed Scrushy for the scheme to cook the company’s books.
