In-house corporate lawyers have not been hit by layoffs the same way as their outside counsel, whose firms have shed associates and even some partners to save money during the recession.
This dynamic has a positive result-a handful of corporate legal offices are hiring more lawyers-but the financial pinch felt in corporate legal departments is real, as in-house lawyers have to negotiate lower outside counsel rates and take on more work.
