A Cobb County Superior Court case raises the issue of whether a lawyer who collects debts should be regulated as a debt collector or lawyer.

The Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs says such a lawyer should be treated like any other debt collector if there are accusations of violating the state’s consumer protection laws. But lawyers for Frederick J. Hanna & Associates say such allegations are an attorney discipline matter, where authority resides solely with the State Bar and its governing agent, the Supreme Court of Georgia.
