In a case of first impression involving two hot-button issues-abortion and press freedom-lawyers on Wednesday sparred over whether the general potential for danger stemming from media coverage of legal action against an abortion clinic is sufficient to justify sealing the court proceedings.

“There is cause for grave concern for the potential for danger,” argued Ashley D. Phillips of Hall, Booth, Smith & Slover, counsel to defendant abortion provider Northside Women’s Clinic. Then, referring to the May 31 killing of George Tiller, a Wichita, Kan., physician who performed late-term abortions, she added, “It only takes one person, your honor, to create an outcome such as what occurred in Kansas last week.”
