A potential constitutional showdown was averted on Friday when Gov. Sonny Perdue and Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears reached an agreement on cutting the judicial branch’s budget.

Perdue last month said that all state agencies, as well as the legislative and judicial branches, would receive 25 percent less money in June because of a $274 million revenue shortfall. The judiciary balked, saying it would be unconstitutional for the governor to order the judicial branch to cut its budget.
