IN AN EFFORT TO MAINTAIN a competitive edge and with increasing pressure from corporate clients, firms more than ever need to demonstrate their commitment to diversity by providing opportunities for employment and promotion of diverse lawyers.

In its ‘A Call to Action: Diversity in the Workplace-A Statement of Principle’ the Association of Corporate Counsel showcased many major corporations’ commitment to diversity. Corporations that became signatories of this statement pledged to enhance opportunities for diversity in their own legal departments as well as to make hiring decisions regarding which law firms would represent their companies based on the diversity performance of the law firm. They also agreed to end relationships with firms whose diversity performance was lacking. As a result, corporations began putting pressure on law firms to make immediate improvements in lawyer diversity.
