THE COST OF THE STATE’S defense against a legal attack on how it funds public schools has crossed the $1 million mark.

According to records provided by Georgia Attorney General Thurbert E. Baker’s office, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan partners Rocco E. Testani and Alfred A. Lindseth have billed the state $1,054,834 in fees and expenses for work performed since April 15, 2006. Two other Sutherland lawyers have also worked on the case, but their work has been billed under Testani’s and Lindseth’s names and hourly rates, according to Russ Willard, a Baker spokesman.
