LITTLE ROCK AP – A judge Friday released the Little Rock School District from a half-century of federal intervention, saying the predominantly black district – scene of the tumultuous 1957 desegregation of Central High School – should be responsible simply to students and taxpayers.
U.S. District Judge William R. Wilson Jr. said the district is substantially complying with a 1998 desegregation plan negotiated among the district, federal monitors and a group called the Joshua intervenors, a group representing black students in the 27,000-student district.
