THE STATE ethics law has sometimes been criticized for lacking teeth, but if Gwinnett District Attorney Danny J. Porter has his way, a man who allegedly failed to register an independent political committee in a local election last year could face criminal penalties.
Gwinnett prosecutors allege that William Dennis McKinney and Nancy Allison Walter violated state ethics laws when they failed to register an independent political committee that tried unsuccessfully to defeat a Gwinnett commissioner. The defendants’ appellate brief contends they are “apparently” the first individuals indicted in Georgia for violation of a section of O.C.G.A. § 21-5-34, a section of the ethics act that governs campaign contribution disclosure reporting.
