VINOD KHOSLA, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and now an affiliate partner in the venture capital firm Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, has celebrity status and corresponding impact in the world of software and investment. So when the Silicon Valley entrepreneur selected an Oconee Valley town as the site for a pioneering plant to make ethanol from cellulose, it was big news.

The plant will be built in Soperton, in Treutlen County, by Range Fuels Inc., a Colorado-based company funded by Khosla’s own investment firm, Khosla Ventures.
