THE PLAINTIFFS IN a high-stakes patent infringement case said a recent ruling by a federal judge is a major step toward their gaining the rights to several wireless data transmission patents estimated to be valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
The case involves efforts by an metro-Atlanta technology developer, IPCO LLC, to secure the rights to patents dealing with “Wireless Gateway” or “mesh” technology. According to the company’s lead attorney, John C. Herman of Duane Morris’ Atlanta office, the technology is widely used for remote meter-reading by utilities and is increasingly relied upon by municipalities installing Wi-Fi networks.
