A PANEL OF THE STATE Court of Appeals has tossed a $5.1 million verdict won by the family of an Emory University student who died after falling from a garbage truck while performing community service for a drunk-driving conviction.
The panel found last week that the family’s suit against DeKalb County, based on the 1999 death of Vincent Robert Currid, was barred by the sovereign immunity the state constitution affords the state and its counties.
