DETERMINED NOT TO ALLOW sea levels and government intervention to rise together, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford earlier this year created a state climate change advisory group that he says will work toward “ecologically responsible solutions based on free-market principles.”

In a column written for the Washington Post, Sanford, a Republican and self-described “conservative conservationist,” said he’s observed the effects of climate change at his farm on the South Carolina coast and believes “human activity is having a measurable effect on the environment.”
