Guests at the Sunset Waters Beach Resort on the west coast of Curacao, Dutch Antilles, feast their eyes on more than palm fronds and an aqua sea. Just past the hotel’s entrance there’s also an unobstructed view of cement blocks, coral fragments and black plastic tubing, all part of the new waste-water treatment facility that the owners chose to deliberately place in plain sight.

”I thought we would give it pre-eminence,” says resort co-owner Ricki Harris. Unsightly as it may be, the point is to showcase the environmentally friendly system, which replaces the less responsible method of simply piping effluent into the sea. The resort plans to use the recycled water for its trees and flowers. ”Our hope is that this is going to catch on around the island,” Harris says.
