As a volunteer rules official for the U.S. Golf Association, Gene McClure has walked the fairways with many of the game’s greats: Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Crenshaw, Hale Irwin and Tiger Woods, to name a few.

Next month, the USGA will honor McClure, 66, at its annual meeting with the Joe Dey Award for his volunteer service to the game. The award is named after the late Joseph C. Dey Jr., who served as USGA executive director from 1934 to 1969, and was later the first commissioner of the PGA Tour.
