At the Georgia State Capitol, House Speaker Thomas B. Murphy was known for sparring with former Gov. Zell Miller, his rough treatment of Republicans and his ability to single-handedly kill legislation.

But in the West Georgia town of Bremen, Tom Murphy, who died Monday night at the age of 83, was known as a lawyer who would take on clients for little or no pay, and who could translate complex matters into common-sense language in the courtroom.
