These are plum times for of Atlanta’s big law firms, whose revenues, almost invariably, are increasing.

But these are also anxious times. Big firms are growing ever-bigger and more strategically focused on key practice areas to keep their big clients and attract new ones. As they expand, so do the expenses and strains. Firms are vulnerable to having their most valuable talent picked off by even bigger national and international firms. Meanwhile, some productive junior partners leave to start their own shops, calculating that lower overhead and the absence of big-firm bureaucracy will mean they can charge lower rates.
