MetroPCS Communications Inc. and Leap Wireless International Inc., two providers of cheap, no-contract mobile-phone service, may be the next Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
As the U.S. economy teeters on the brink of a recession, consumers who can’t win credit approval at AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless are opting for pay-as-you-go plans that cost as little as 70 percent less, or $30 a month, for unlimited calling. MetroPCS, based in Dallas, forecasts a 38 percent surge in customers this year to 5.5 million. Analysts project a 21 percent gain at San Diego-based Leap to 3.46 million.
