PFIZER INC.’S surprise promotion of General Counsel Jeffrey Kindler to the corner office last month may have startled company analysts, but the appointment no doubt prompted nods of recognition from former general counsel in CEO roles in industries from utilities to telecommunications software.
Moving from the general counsel chair to the chief executive officer post is more common than ever, say executive-recruitment experts, particularly as highly regulated industries such as energy and pharmaceuticals take center stage in the economy and increasingly value the counsel of in-house lawyers.
