A FULTON COUNTY JURY on Thursday awarded $3.28 million to shop owners who claimed their landlords at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport should have lowered their rent in the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

At issue was a 1995 lease between the city of Atlanta and WH Smith Airport Services Inc. and Hartsfield Air Ventures, which leases the retail the shops in the airport’s atrium. The lease said that any government action that reduced or shut down the retail businesses for more than seven days would-provided notice was given to the city-trigger an “abatement” of a portion of the concessionaires’ rental fees.
