SIX OF THE 50 wealthiest charitable organizations in the nation are based in Georgia-but you may not have heard of some of them.

In all, 17 Georgia organizations made the 2006 list of the nation’s 400 largest charities released this week by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, the authoritative newspaper of the nonprofit community. The rankings are based on cash donations raised during the year, as well as gifts of art, stock, real estate, medicine, food and other non-cash items. The data are for fiscal year 2005, or 2006 for organizations with fiscal years ending in January, February or March.
