“WE HAVE LAW firms and clients asking us how to get on the list,” says Cathy Benton, Alston & Bird’s chief human resources officer. “Every year it gets more and more competitive.” Indeed it appears that more law firms are throwing their hats in the ring to be considered for Fortune’s nine-year-old survey, “The 100 Best Companies to Work For.”

For the 2006 ranking, which came out in January, Fortune says about 1,500 companies contacted it or were invited to participate; of those, 466 completed the survey process.
