Those who oppose direct election of judges say campaigns in which candidates take financial contributions from potential litigants-and their lawyers-compromise the independence of the judiciary. Judicial election supporters respond that other systems-such as appointment by a governor-don’t take the politics out of judicial selection but just make the process less transparent and less inclusive.
