FOR YEARS, Attorney General Thurbert E. Baker has bemoaned the low pay of lawyers on his staff. No attorney on Baker’s staff, including the AG himself and a number of lawyers with more than more than 20 years of experience, makes a yearly salary of more than $130,000.
It’s a different story for lawyers who perform freelance work for the attorney general’s office. One lawyer, Lawson, Davis, Pickren & Seydel partner G. Thomas Davis, billed about $1.49 million for work on three separate cases in the last fiscal year, which ended June 30.
