PARIS-Merger talks between France’s Alcatel SA and U.S. rival Lucent Technologies could stand a better chance of success than a previous attempt by the two telecom equipment makers to join forces five years ago, analysts said Friday.

The discussions, acknowledged by the two companies late Thursday, nevertheless appear to be far from a conclusion and could yet fall afoul of political obstacles at a time of heightened protectionism, some cautioned.
