A SIZEABLE SEGMENT of the State Bar of Georgia’s bankruptcy law section has kept itself busy over the past few years working on the bankruptcy saga of Rhodes Furniture, the now-defunct retailer founded in Atlanta in 1879. In the process, dozens of Atlanta lawyers have billed millions of dollars in fees.

The law firms that submitted bills for approval by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge James E. Massey so far have been awarded a total of $4.2 million in legal fees and expenses. Massey awarded Rhodes’ outside counsel-eight King & Spalding lawyers, led by partners Sarah R. Borders and Paul K. Ferdinands-a total of $3.42 million, $3.2 million of that for fees and more than $190,000 for expenses, for work done between November 2004 and February 2006.
