MY PENGUIN GUIDE to classical music, which is a few years out-of-date, has 1,580 pages. It begins with a listing for Carl Friedrich Abel, an 18th century composer and impresario, and ends with a brief note on Sarah Walker, a 20th century mezzo-soprano. Between these two rather modest listings, in print small enough to challenge even the best eyesight, is a compendium of detailed classical music reviews.
Fortunately you don’t need a copy of the Penguin Guide to become familiar with and enjoy classical music. Even if you can’t tell the difference between a G-clef and a G-string, you can still develop a listening taste for the likes of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and other classical music composers without possessing any specialized musical knowledge.
