FOR SIX YEARS, NASCAR driver Jeff Burton’s bright orange No. 31 car with the trademark jack of Cingular Wireless has been a mobile billboard for the telecommunications company in the fastest-growing spectator sport in the nation.

But last year’s merger of AT&T and BellSouth Corp., which jointly owned Cingular, is causing trouble for NASCAR and its No. 31 car.
