Revenue increased less than 2 percent at Kilpatrick Stockton, but total profit shot up 17 percent. Profit per equity partner increased about 12 percent following a 13 percent profit drop in 2009. The firm is now Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, thanks to a Jan. 1 merger with San Francisco-based intellectual property firm Townsend and Townsend and Crew. The merger, announced in November, expanded the firm from about 425 lawyers to more than 600 and gave it a major West Coast presence, with four California offices plus offices in Seattle, Denver and Tokyo. Kilpatrick also opened an Oakland, Calif., office in October by acquiring a 10-lawyer construction law boutique. The firms chairman, William E. Dorris, said Kilpatrick Stockton started 2010 with an almost flat budget. The revenue increase was slightly better than expected and the profit increase was a good bit better, he said. Dorris said Kilpatrick reaped the benefit of 2009 cost-cutting measures, which included layoffs and salary cuts. He said the firm also saved some money by renegotiating its Atlanta and Washington leases early. The profit increase came even as the firm reported four more equity partners than in 2009. Total head count dwindled by about six lawyers to 424. In December, Kilpatrick achieved an historic $3.4 billion settlement with the U.S. government in Cobell v. Salazar, a class action the firm had litigated for 14 years on behalf of American Indians alleging the Department of the Interior had mismanaged their royalties from leases of tribal land. A federal judge has not yet determined the firms fees. Dorris said they could be anywhere from $50 million to $223 million.
