Unlike many Am Law 100 firms, King & Spalding made a lot of money last year. The firm reported increases in revenue, profit and revenue per lawyer, plus a 16.8 percent increase in profit per partner to $1.4 million. Chairman Robert D. Hays said the firm was able to win more work from clients, despite the recession, by offering high-level expertise at competitive rates. Layoffs, pay cuts and other cost-saving measures helped increase profit, following a 12 percent dip the previous year. King & Spalding netted two fewer equity partners last year after adding 19 in 2008. The firm confined expansion to a new seven-lawyer Paris office that is intended to develop its European business arbitration practice.
