Sutherland saw work flow slow, resulting in a revenue decline of almost 7 percent last year, but that’s something Mark D. Wasserman, the firm’s managing partner, said he expected. In anticipation of that decline, the firm cut costs, including dropping starting salaries for associates and outsourcing some services. The savings, along with six fewer equity partners, helped push partners’ profit up nearly $80,000, to an average of $910,000.
