Firm managing partner David J. Hooker said the Cleveland-based firm mitigated damage to its bottom line by reducing compensation and through layoffs of at least 12 lawyers, five paralegals and 29 administrative staff. The cuts were the firms first lawyer layoffs. The firm also instituted an across-the-board $17,500 associate salary cut and deferred its starting dates for the would-be 2009 associates until this year. Locally, life sciences promises to be a hot area with the change in the nations health care system, according to Atlanta partner-in-charge Walt Addison Linscott. “Expect continued rate and efficiency pressures to impact the business of law,” he said. “Success will be measured by the value conferred not the billable hour.”
