In a spot of good news amid budget cuts, Gwinnett County Legal Aid will receive at least an extra $100,000 each year to expand its work with Gwinnett’s private lawyers on pro bono cases.

The new funds come because Gwinnett’s population exceeded 600,000 in the last census. When that happens, a state law requires extra filing fees of $2 to be added for actions in state court and $3 in magistrate court to support pro bono legal aid efforts in the county. Such programs already exist in Fulton, DeKalb, and Cobb counties.
