Steven Horn sued his clients. Unhappy with the result, the Encino, Calif., attorney sued the law firm that represented him in the suit against the clients. When an arbitrator ruled for the firm, he hired a private investigator to check into the arbitrator.

The reward for these efforts: three adverse attorney fee awards worth a total of more than $500,000 and, as of Wednesday, a published appellate opinion holding that arbitrators are not compromised by casual professional relationships with witnesses.
