When Jeanne Canavan talks to her children about the benefits of hard work, she doesn’t point to her victories as a DeKalb County deputy chief assistant district attorney. Instead, she goes back to her first job at Swenson’s Ice Cream factory in Manhasset, N.Y., where her work ethic moved her up from ice cream scooper to ice cream sundae maker.

“It’s corny but that was a big deal. I learned that no matter what your job is, working hard will pay off,” she says. “I moved up to fountain work, making elaborate sundaes for the sit-down customers. We would literally have a line out the door every day for ice cream cones. I was so proud of myself that my hard work was recognized. Making sundaes is a whole lot less messy.”
